The chess games in the 20th Maccabiah have reached their decisive stage when after 6 rounds both grandmaster groups see a sole leader, and yet with a close and open race.

The 20th Maccabiah was officially opened in the Israeli capital of Jerusalem and is the greatest Maccabiah since the first edition held in 1932

The chess tournaments in the 20th Maccabiah will be held on July 5-14 in Dan hotel, Jerusalem starting from 15.00. 6 events are scheduled: 2 GM groups, 2 IM groups, one Open group and a junior tournament in Nesher nearby Haifa.
President of the World Chess Federation Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will arrive for a 24-hour visit to Israel on the occasion of the opening of the chess competitions in the 20th Maccabiah Games.

The concept of Maccabiah Games, as a Jewish Olympiad, was the brainchild of 15 years old Russian-born Yosef Yekutieli following the Olympic Games held in Stockholm in 1912.
